War Child United: Zo Kwe Zo

In September 2024 War Child launched it’s first limited edition football shirt. The shirt, which will be the first in a series of “War Child United” releases, has been created to utilise football’s global reach to highlight the suffering of children and young people in The Central African Republic (CAR).

The nation has been engulfed by a humanitarian tragedy for a decade, brought about by political instability and clashes between different factions. For many children and young people this can mean separation from their families, violence, sexual abuse, or recruitment into armed groups. Sadly, much of this goes unnoticed by the international community.

The shirt was designed by a group of talented young people in CAR and brought to life at Kitlocker HQ by our design team. The headline message behind it is “Zo Kwe Zo”, which translates to “all people are people”.

The lead designer from CAR, David Louison Ningando, said: “Starting from the five colours of the flag, we have highlighted two colours, namely blue and white. In this way we wish to transmit a message of stability, forgiveness, peace, of a new Central Africa.”

We utilised our MTO capabilities in order to achieve a product that matches the requested design as closely as possible and conveys the story that the designers wanted to share with the world. Our specialised in-house design team took what was a design on paper and digitised it ready for real life production.

As a sub-license holder for Umbro, we used their branding to create an authentic “football look” to the shirt and to provide the gravitas that only the double diamond logo can bring.

We’re also assisting War Child by retailing the shirt on Kitlocker.com, with 250 limited edition garments available to purchase, with all profits going directly back to the charity

George Baverstock, Partnerships Executive Manager at War Child UK, said: “The process of launching a shirt has been quite the undertaking for War Child, as this is not our bread and butter.

“I think the first time doing anything presents challenges, but for us, we have been lucky to benefit from a very positive relationship with Kitlocker, who have been great to work with during every process, ranging from design fulfilment to ecommerce and more.

“We have also been fortunate to collaborate with Kitlocker as part of their wider commitment to initiatives such as Grenfell Athletic FC and Kick Start FC, among others.”

The limited edition War Child United: Zo Kwe Zo shirt can be purchased from Kitlocker.com. All profits from sales of the shirt will go directly back to the charity.

And keep your eyes peeled for the next shirts in the War Child United series.
